UK Edition: Fabulous Facial Flora For Movember [Etsy: Craftivism]

UK Edition: Fabulous Facial Flora For Movember: "

What is Movember?

On November 1, 2010, men worldwide sheared, shaved, plucked, and waxed their faces in preparation for 30 consecutive days of facial-topiary cultivation to raise money for the Movember Foundation.

Legend has it that back in 2004, four Australian chaps known as Travis Garone, Adam Garone, Justin Coghlanand and Luke Slattery grew moustaches from scratch during the month of November to raise funds for several men’s health charities. They have since co-founded the annual fundraising event known as "Movember," which has snowballed to over 255,000 participants worldwide. The event raised £26 million for charity in 2009. “Mo way!” I hear you say.

Movember 2010

This year Movember participants in the UK are fundraising for the Prostate Cancer Charity and Everyman (Institute of Cancer Research). According to Cancer Research UK, prostate cancer is the most common cancer for men in the UK and a quarter of all new cases of cancer diagnosed in men are prostate cancers. Despite these statistics, the majority of people seem to know little about the prostate: where it is, what it does, and the symptoms of prostate-related health issues. By participating in Movember we aim to raise awareness and educate people about this lesser-known organ of the male anatomy.

What can I do?

If you cannot grow your own upper-lip shrubbery but would like to participate, fear not – fake it! I hereby declare November 30, 2010 the day for whisker-less individuals and latecomers to sport faux ’staches instead of moustaches in public for the entire day and get sponsored for it. I've pledged to do this myself, so please register and join me! Did I mention I go everywhere by public transport?

Download Heidi's specially created illustrations for free on her blog to help spread the word.

If you really don't fancy looking a bit of a wally, you can sponsor people individually via their sponsor page or donate directly at Movember.com. Some wonderful Etsy sellers have already listed items donating profits to the cause. Another great way to contribute is to spread the word about Movember in person, or using social media, to raise awareness and support your friends. Any method of fundraising is great, and you’re not limited to the mo’. The more creative the better!
